Who: Two women in their 20s
Where: West Midlands Region, UK
Their mistake: Not sure if it was equipment failure or if they didn’t set their gear correctly
What happened: A group of six women from a rugby club went out for a day of climbing. Two of the climbers were roped together on the wall when the other four waited at the base of the cliff. One of the women fell and dragged the other down with her. They fell 40 feet towards large, sharp rocks. Luckily, the two climbers fell on top of two of their friends. One of the climbers suffered a broken leg. The other sustained back and neck injuries. The two “cushion” friends were not injured. Authorities say the two friends saved the climbers’ life.
Fire and rescue crews were called to the scene. It took the team two hours to haul the women up the cliff. One woman was taken to a hospital via helicopter. The other was transported in an ambulance.
