About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

DEVELOPING: Lost Hiker Found in Pisgah National Forest

Photobucket
Who: A female hiker
Where: Trace Ridge, Pisgah National Forest, North Carolina
Her mistake: She hiked in unfamiliar territory. Not sure where the mistake was made
What happened: A woman and her brother planned to take a day hike to the top of Trace Ridge. This was the first time the hikers have been in the area and they only had a few crackers and water to eat. They hiked up, but wound up far from their destination. They tried to follow a horse trail down, but for some reason they became stuck.

The woman started screaming for help. A young couple and a hunter heard her cries and called authorities. Rescue workers searched for 3 ½ hours before finding the lost hiker. It is unclear if the woman started screaming because she was hurt, lost, exhausted or stuck. Rescue crews are still working to get the woman out. It is not clear what happened to the brother. I will post more details if they surface.
