About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Hiker Breaks Ankle in Wine Country

Photobucket
Who: A 64-year-old woman
Where: Robert Louis Stevenson State Park, California
Her mistake: Just a simple mis-step
What happened: Instead of boozing up, a 64-year-old woman decided to go for a hike at Robert Louis Stevenson State Park near Napa. (Not sure which one is more healthy with all of that “wine is good for you talk.”)

The woman somehow broke her ankle on the trail about five miles in from the trailhead. It’s unclear if she slipped, tripped, fell or otherwise. Because of the rough terrain, firefighters on foot were unable to haul her out. Instead, they requested a chopper to come in and hoist her to safety. The woman was taking to a local hospital where she was treated. Maybe she should’ve boozed up instead.
