About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Hiker Falls 30 Feet From Embankment

Photobucket
Who: A 20-year-old man
Where: Jurupa Hills, Southern California
His mistake: It is unclear
What happened: A man was hiking alone on a trial when he lost his footing on a loose, rocky hillside. The man fell about 30 feet and landed in between two boulders. He had to brace himself because below the boulders was a 1,000-foot drop. Luckily, he only suffered minor cuts and bruises.

While bracing himself, the man yelled for help and another hiker in the area heard the man. The passerby called 911. Two Sheriff choppers were sent to the scene. One chopper lowered firefighters a couple feet above the fallen hiker. The firefighters were able to package him for an air rescue.
