Who: 24-year-old Frederick Hayes from Australia
Where: Grouse Mountain, a.k.a. the Grouse Grind, British Columbia, Canada
His mistake: He became separated from his friend and wasn’t dressed for the weather
What happened: Aussie. Aussie. Aussie. Doy. Doy. Doy. An Australian hiker and his friend went for a day hike on North Vancouver’s Grouse Mountain, also known as the Grouse Grind for its strenuous nature.

The man was wearing only light hiking pants and a hoodie. He wasn’t carrying a flashlight or any other gear. It is unclear if he had food and water. The pair made it to the peak of their destination and somehow became separated on the descent. When 2 a.m. passed, his friends called authorities to report him missing.
Even though it was dark, pouring rain and heavy snow prompted searchers to immediately begin searching for the man instead of waiting for first light. Searchers used noise makers including whistles and bear bombs in hopes of making verbal contact with the lost hiker. By 5 a.m., the man was found. He was huddled under a log and was showing signs of hypothermia. He was escorted down the mountain by rescuers.
