About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Lost Hiker Found Alive, Dies During Rescue

Photobucket
Who: 64-year-old David Frank Bone
Where: Snyder-Middleswarth Nature Area, Bald Eagle State Forest, Pennsylvania
His mistake: It’s unknown
What happened: A man went hiking alone in a densely-wooded area in the Snyder-Middleswarth Nature Area. It is unclear if the man was on a day hike or a multi-day hike. The man’s wife reported him missing at 8:05 p.m. on Tuesday when he was overdue for his return.

Between 30 and 60 volunteers searched for him for 16 hours before locating him the next day. He was about 2 ½ miles from the road. Rescuers couldn’t determine if he was in or out of conscious and his only visible injuries were scrapes and bruises on his legs.

Rescuers decided to haul the man out by foot out to the road. The trail was said to be rough, rocky and steep. Even though the man seemed to be in decent shape when he was found, rescuers said the man deteriorated quickly on the trail. During the rescue, the man died.

Authorities are investigating the cause of death. Authorities did say he was wearing a fanny pack with granola bars, but there is no word if he had other survival gear with him.
