About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Photobucket
Who: A 42-year-old woman
Where: Forest near Wendell State Forest, Massachusetts
Her mistake: Looks like poor planning
What happened: A woman went for a late afternoon bike ride in a forested area near Wendell State Forest. As darkness fell, the woman lost the trail and called for help at 7 p.m.

Authorities used the woman’s cell phone GPS coordinates to locate her position. Foot teams, all-terrain vehicles and a chopper were sent to get the woman. Eventually, the woman on her cell phone was able to direct searchers to her location by using the lights of the helicopter to guide them.

Four hours later, the woman was found. She was in good condition and declined any kind of treatment. Authorities said about 30 rescue personnel participated in the search and the area the biker was lost in was heavily wooded and extremely thick.
