Who: A 43-year-old woman
Where: Mauna Loa, Hawaii
Her mistake: She didn’t wait for her husband when he took a break
What happened: A husband and wife went on a day hike on the lava fields around the Mauna Loa Observatory where they began their hike. Shortly after leaving the observatory, the husband stopped to rest, but the wife continued on without him.
The husband was looking for his wife as he continued the hike and made his way back to the observatory. When he realized his wife may have been lost, he called authorities. Fire and rescue crews responded and began to look for the woman. The next morning, the woman was able to make cell phone contact with authorities. But she was unfamiliar with the area and unable to identify the lava field she was on.
Authorities were able to use the woman’s cell phone signal to triangulate her location. She was picked up by authorities and brought to safety. She was in good condition and in good spirits. She only requested something to drink. Maybe she’ll think twice about leaving a hiking partner behind next time she’s out.

I’m amazed by all these people who get separated from their group. Especially if there’s only two of you!
