About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

One Hiker Dead, Other Suffers From Frostbite on Mono Pass

Photobucket
Who: 65-year-old William Bridger and 64-year-old Cory Largman
Where: Mono Pass near Edison Lake, California
Their mistake: It’s unknown. Looks like they got lost, then one of them fell
What happened: Two men left for a camping trip on Oct. 1. They were supposed to return this week. When they didn’t return, family members alerted authorities and a search began.

What family members didn’t know was the two men became lost several days ago. They tried to get to a lower elevation and became separated. While the two were apart, one of the men took a fall and became injured. It is unclear what injuries he sustained, but it looks like he was unable to continue on.

One hiker, William Bridger, was found by deputies. He was suffering from frostbite. Frostbite or not, Bridger assisted deputies in helping find his friend. A sheriff’s chopper was sent to the hikers’ campsite and authorities located the lifeless body of his friend. Cory Largman’s body was found near his tent. It is unclear what caused the man’s death, but authorities do not expect foul play.
