About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Search and Rescue Team Delays Beer for Rescue

Photobucket
Who: A 76-year-old woman
Where: Blackstone Edge, UK
Her mistake: Looks like a simple mis-step
What happened: The Calder Valley Search and Rescue team were training and heading back to the Shepherds Rest pub when they were flagged down by a hiker. The hiker said there was a woman about 200 meters from the road who suffered a broken ankle during a hike.

Apparently, the 76-year-old woman was hiking with her husband when she took a mis-step and broke her ankle. Her husband waited with her until he was able to flag down another hiker to go for help. The search and rescue team mounted up and made contact with the woman. She was packaged and hauled down the hill to a waiting ambulance. The rescue team said they would have been called out for the rescue anyway. Good thing they were flagged down before they reached the pub.
