About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Solo Climber Seriously Injured in Mountain Fall

Photobucket
Who: A Chinese man
Where: Shark’s Tooth, Mt. Taranaki, New Zealand
His mistake: He was traveling alone, but not much is known beyond that
What happened: A Chinese man and another unknown climber carpooled to the base of Mt. Taranaki. Although both men traveled to the mountain together, they both chose to climb the mountain solo. It is unclear how the two climbers met and why they chose to climb solo.

The Chinese man was on the climb towards the summit and somewhere near the Shark’s Tooth, the man slipped and tumbled 150 meters down the mountain and landed on a rocky outcrop. Authorities said the man was not too far from another bluff that would have sent the man tumbling even further.

Even though the two men were solo, the other climber noticed his carpool buddy disappeared. He became worried about him and climbed down the hill to find the injured man. The carpool buddy called authorities to report the incident.

Search and rescue teams arrived and transported the injured man to the base camp hospital. He was reported to be in critical, but stable condition. Authorities said that it is not uncommon for mountaineers to climb the mountain alone. Details are still thin on the exact events that took place.
