About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Two Killed in Indian Avalanche

Photobucket
Who: Mangesh Despande and an unknown mountaineer, both from Mumbai
Where: Mt. Thingchinkhang, India
Their mistake: Bad luck. Not sure if there were any signs in the snow
What happened: A team of four mountaineers and two Sherpas tackled Mt. Thingchinkhang. The team successfully made it to the summit of the mountain and began to descend back to base camp.

At an altitude of 5,400 meters, the team was hit by an avalanche that swept away one of the team members. That member was later found dead in a debris field. Another mountaineer was also hit by the avalanche and was injured. Unfortunately the man later succumbed to his injuries and died.

After the avalanche hit, a Sherpa ran down to report the incident. Air Force choppers, and other support responded to the scene and located one of the bodies. A mission to recover the body is underway.
