Who: 20-year-old Chandler Nunley and Donald Brewer
Where: The Thumb, Little Cottonwood Canyon, Utah
Their mistake: They attempted a route that was way above their heads
What happened: Two hikers decided to hike up the Thumb, a 900-foot cliff in Little Cottonwood Canyon. The hikers have hiked up the cliff before, but never in the winter – and they didn’t bring any safety gear.
During their climb, they found themselves on a precarious ledge. They were a good 20 to 30 feet above another ledge with no way to climb higher or down climb he cliff. At nightfall, the hikers decided to use their cell phones to call for help. Rescuers responded and were able to locate the men, but because of the darkness, the rescue was postponed until first light. The hikers were forced to spend the night on the ledge.
A chopper was brought in and the hikers were plucked from the cliff. Rescuers were amazed the two men were able to climb so high on the cliff with no safety gear. The men were brought to safety and neither had any injuries.
