About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Fallen Man Clings To Crack Above 120-Foot Waterfall Ledge

Photobucket
Who: A 79-year-old man
Where: Aira Force waterfall, Ullswater, Lake District, UK
His mistake: Not sure how he fell
What happened: A man was enjoying the popular Aira Force waterfalls in the Lake District of the UK. Somehow, the man fell from his lookout. He caught himself and held onto a crack just a short distance from a 120-foot drop down the main waterfall chute. The man was being pummeled by water and becoming very cold while he waited for help.

Police, fire and the Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team responded to the scene. The rescue team used a rope safety system to make contact with the man, package him and place him in a stretcher. A chopper flew in and plucked the man to safety. There were no reports of injuries, but authorities said he was cold.
