About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Hiker Survives 3 Days in Wilderness with Broken Pelvis

Photobucket
Who: 26-year-old Jordan Nicurity
Where: Hornby Island, British Columbia, Canada
His mistake: He was alone, but ultimately it was a simple fall
What happened: A man went on a hiking and climbing trip alone on Hornby Island in British Columbia. While climbing in an area, the man’s sandstone handhold broke loose and sent the man tumbling six meters down a slope. He shattered his pelvis and injured his foot in the fall.

The hiker could hear “crunching noises” when he tried to move, but he was still able to move his toes. Adding to the situation, the man only had a gulp of tea, no other food or water. He had no cell phone and was forced to crawl to safety. He crawled through a meadow and licked the water off the grass to stay hydrated. He then dragged himself along trails and spent a couple nights on the beach while it poured rain.

Finally, on the third day, a group of hikers heard the man’s scream. First, they thought the screams were an eagle, but then they realized it was a man. He was rescued and transported to a local hospital where he is receiving treatment. Doctors say it will take 6 months to recover from his injuries.
