About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Hikers Trapped on Peninsula by Rising Tide

Photobucket
Who: Two women
Where: Cape Split, Nova Scotia
Their mistake: A simple fall led to bad timing
What happened: Two hikers went on a hike on the Main Trail of Cape Split, a peninsula that extends from the mainland out to a rock formation. During their hike on a steep trail, one of the women fell and injured her shoulder. They became delayed and the rising tide blocked the path back to the mainland. At high tide, the rock formation at the end of the peninsula becomes an island.

The women called for help and told rescuers that the water would cover the trail in 30 to 45 minutes. Rescue teams sent two boats and a helicopter to the scene. The boats were able to reach the hiker quickly. They were cold, but not quite hypothermic. They were both boated to safety.
