Who: Four hikers
Where: Jonesville Cliff, Vermont
Their mistake: They started late, and didn’t expect certain conditions
What happened: Four hikers decided to go on a late afternoon hike before Thanksgiving dinner. The group hiked to Jonesville Cliff, a place they have hiked before, all the way back to when they were kids.
Darkness approached faster than they expected and they were met with slippery conditions caused by leaves and moss. Two of the hikers scrambled down the cliff with no problem. The third climber slipped and fell 35 feet to the bottom. He gained consciousness quickly after the fall, but was confused on what happened. The fourth hiker was too scared to climb down after seeing his friend slip.
Rescue crews were called out. The injured man was transported to a local hospital with a broken arm. Teams climbed to the top of the cliff and lowered a harness to rescue the stranded climber. Authorities commend the stranded climber for staying put and calling for help. Things could have been more complicated if teams needed to rescue two injured hikers instead of one.
