Who: World-class Slovenian Rock Climber, Tomaz Humar
Where: Langtang Lirung, a 23,711-foot peak in Nepal
His mistake: He was an experienced climber pushing his limits. Not sure what went on
What happened: A Slovenian climber was attempting a solo expedition to the top of Langtang Lirung in Nepal. His goal was to ascend the 23,711-foot mountain on its west face by himself, although he did have a cook at basecamp.

During the man’s ascent, he got into some trouble and sustained leg injuries. The climber phoned down to base camp to say he was unable to continue and he was in very serious condition. Base camp called for rescue, and the next morning, a Nepalese rescue team was choppered to the mountain. The rescue team climbed to the point where he was last spotted, but the injured climber was not found. Snow storms and avalanche danger forced the rescue team back to base camp.
The next morning, a Swiss rescue team arrived, but because of bad weather, a rescue was not possible. The last transmission between the lost climber and base camp was many days ago. It was brief and sounded critical.
The climber is a very experienced mountaineer and has completed nearly 70 first ascents up some of the world’s dangerous mountains.
