About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Photobucket
Who: Igor Sherstnev and Anfisa krasheninina of Russia
Where: Siguniang (Four Girls) Mountain, Sichuan Province, China
Their mistake: Looks like bad luck. Not sure what the snow conditions were or if the climbers were able to evaluate it
What happened: Four Russians were on a backpacking and climbing trip on Siguniang Mountain. At an elevation of 6,250 feet, the men stopped to take photos. Then, an avalanche broke loose above them. Three were buried, but the man who wasn’t buried was able to locate one of his friends and dig him out.

The other two couldn’t be immediately found so the Russians called for help. The language barrier caused some delay. Since the Russians couldn’t speak Chinese or English. And the rescuers couldn’t understand Russian.

Eventually, 30 Chinese rescuers climbed to their location to search for the missing hikers. Heavy snow and severe weather conditions are hampering the search mission. The Chinese government vows to find the men in the avalanche debris.
