Their mistake: They were poorly prepared for the cold and darkness
What happened: Two college students planned for an overnight camping trip on Camels Hump in Vermont. They hiked up to the tree line before the summit and set up camp. But they were unprepared for the cold and darkness.
Rain came in and the hikers got wet and unable to start a fire. When they went into their tent, the curled up into their sleeping bags, but they were still too cold. In addition, the hikers only brought up one flashlight.
They weren’t injured, but they used a cell phone to call for help. A rescue team was sent to their site and made contact with the hikers at 11:30 p.m. The hikers were escorted down the mountain and made it to the trailhead at 2:16 a.m.
