Who: 26-year-old Matthew Byron Allison and 37-year-old James Briscall
Where: Chinamans Bluff, New Zealand
Their mistake: Bad rope luck
What happened: This is an update of the rock climbing death of a man who was on Chinamans Bluff in New Zealand. The two rock climbers have climbed in the area before and are experienced rock climbers.
After a day of climbing, the men were lowering themselves down to the base of the rock. During their descent, the rock got caught on the rock. One of the men tried to free the rope and anchored himself to the tree. He lost his balance somehow and the tree broke free. The man fell 155 meters to his death.
The other climber became stranded on a ledge until the next morning when rescue crews arrived. It is unclear if the fallen man freeclimbed to the rope or if they tried to belay the man from the ledge with the other side of the rope.
