Who: 27-year-old Alisa Franck
Where: Chico Mountain, Idaho
Her mistake: She and her hiking partner separated, but she was wearing warm clothes
What happened: A woman and her boyfriend, 42-year-old David Dodd, went on a dayhike on Chico Mountain in Northern Idaho. At some point of the hike, the two separated and were expected to rendezvous shortly after. Unfortunately, the woman never made it to the rendezvous point and her boyfriend reported her missing.
The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Department and other search and rescue teams began a search. When they arrived at the trailhead, there was three to five inches on the ground. Rescue teams were able to make cell phone contact with the woman, but she was lost and unable to tell rescuers where she was. She was dressed in warm clothes for the weather, but didn’t have survival equipment. During the call to rescuers, the woman’s cell phone lost battery.
Snow continued to fall, and rescuers were only able to send ground crews. Overnight, the storm let up, and rescuers were able to send more search crews and a helicopter. The next morning, the woman walked out of the wilderness and found a snowmobile parking lot where search and rescue crews found the woman. She was cold, but in otherwise good health. The woman told authorities that she simply she curled into a ball to keep herself warm in the snow.
