About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Man Dies in Grand Canyon Fall

Photobucket
Who: 62-year-old B. Holt Vaughn
Where: Between Mather Point and Pipe Creek Vista, South Rim, Grand Canyon
His mistake: Looks like a simple fall
What happened: A man was visiting the south rim of the Grand Canyon when he somehow fell of the side of a lookout. Other park visitors reported a hiker over the edge and rangers found the lifeless man of the body below.

Park rangers rappelled down to the bottom of the canyon and packaged him for a helicopter recovery. Park rangers are still investigating the incident. Nearly three years ago, a 4-year-old girl fell to her death in the same area. There are on average three visitors who die from falls at the Grand Canyon annually.
