About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Man Survives 400-Meter Fall

Photobucket
Who: A 27-year-old climber
Where: On the Hirschkarlgrat in Obersteirmark, Austria
His mistake: Choosing a short route down a steep snow gully
What happened: The 27-year-old-climber and a partner were descending from the Hirscchkarlgrat towards the Grieskogel and decided to take a shorter route down a snow covered ravine. When they were 400 meters down the ravine, they ran into frozen snow causing the climber to slip and fall 150 meters down the ravine. When his partner reached him he was unable to get a cell phone signal to call for help and had to climb down until he ran into a hunter who drove him for help. A rescue helicopter recovered the fallen climber from the ravine and he was pronounced dead by air rescue doctor.
